Halloween setup & new Light-o-Rama controllers

I’ve wanted these amazing Light-o-Rama lights animation show controllers for a few years and this year we finally have them! Now our halloween and xmas light displays will be custom animated to mp3s. WOOHOO!

I’m also making custom SPT2 exension cord wiring harnesses for all our light objects which is more cost effective and much easier to work with in the future.

Animated Christmas Lights!

This is our third xmas in the house and first year to animate the outdoor lights.

There are:
2,235 bulbs
1,173 feet of wiring (0.22 miles, 0.36 kms)
127 watts

Display objects:
1 9′ tree, green; gold
1 7′ tree, green
1 5′ tree, green
3 tree stars, warm white
2 reindeer, pure white
5 candy canes, red
2 wreaths, green
2 wreath bows, red
1 pillar, red
1 roof line, blue
1 fence line, blue
1 “Be Merry”, red
1 “FM 89.8″, warm white (NOT up due to transmitter problem)

Setup schedule:
Week of Oct. 28 = Planning & purchasing
Nov. 3/4 = Started building; purchasing
Nov. 10/11 = Primary setup; started lights
Nov. 17 = Finish setup

Run schedule:
Nov 11 – Dec 31 = Runs from dusk (~4:30pm) for 6 hours

This is our first year to have only LED lights both outside and inside to help save energy. Even with a couple thousand bulbs, we are using only 127 watts outside! And since they’re animated, only some of them are on at any given time, consuming even less!!

This year’s animation was done with the Mr. Christmas sound & music show controller, purchased from Canadian Tire. It has six unique power channels so the displays are somewhat limited. Starting to plan for a Light-o-Rama or similar controller for many more options in 2008.

Also added a small FM transmitter so people can listen to the music with the lights by radio instead of blasting it out to the neighbours all the time. (NOT up due to transmitter problem.)
